Ancient Greek Terms and People

Today in class we discussed several Greek terms and their meanings; as well as the great Greek scholar Socrates. We discussed how he made the Socratic method of learning. This is where the teacher stimulates the students’ minds to ask questions and question what has already been discovered. Mr. Schick used this method to teach us today about the Socratic Method. Even while we were asking questions we didn’t realize this until he explained it to us. We learned how amazing Socrates was, and how he affects us today. He even died for what he stood up for; even when he had supporters that could save him. We also talked about other Greek words that were used to define Greek democracy in their society. Like some words meaning citizenship or locations used for voting. The Greeks used Democracy in everything from the price of olive oil to other things like senators.

Arete- Arete was used as the Greek word for excellence or really good.

Polis- Can mean citizenship or define the Ancient Greek city-states as they were called.

Socrates- Socrates was an amazing Greek scholar that discovered the Socratic Method. He got the people of Ancient Greece to start thinking for themselves rather than let an authority tell them what was what.

Socrates’s Death- Socrates died after he was brought to trial for corrupting the minds of youth and disrespecting the gods.  He died of a terrible poison on his prison bed.

The Socratic Method- The Socratic Method was a method made by the Ancient Greek scholar Socrates who used this method to teach young Greeks to question things. He didn’t just want them to accept something he wanted them to challenge it.

Date: 508 B.C.- Democracy was created in Greece following a revolution in Athens.

Agora- An agora was like a podium used to announce things in a public place, when translated it means gathering place.

What did Ancient Greeks mean if they called you an idiot? – The law stated that everyone had the right to vote and if you didn't you were considered an idiot.

It's Survival of The Fittest...

Today in class we discussed a little passage know as A Message To Garcia by Elbert Hubbard. I also take it Mr. Schick really likes the name Elbert, because today he also said he would name his next dog that; which I found nice and the rest of the class all smiled as well. A Message to Garcia took place in Cuba during the Spanish-American War and went from April to August of 1898. The point of the story was that they sent only one man to get the message to Garcia. The special thing about this man; he didn’t complain, he didn’t say of what dangers he thought he would face, he just did his job with no complaints. His name was Rowan. While we were discussing this topic more we found the everyday working man is lazy according to the passage. Most of them always try to get out of extra work and other such things. They never go up and above their call of duty except for the man in the story, Rowan. He is the kind of man wanted in every town or business as the author tells it. The only other way to make a working man do his job is to make him think he will be fired. There is a phrase we used to describe this, “It’s the survival of the fittest” meaning only the best survive. I’ll be honest; I don’t think I could carry a message to Garcia….

My First Real Day of High School

Today was my first real day of Mr. Schick’s class and high school at John Carroll. Today in class, we learned what to do and not to do during class. Such as, do not fool around and play Angry Birds during class. Another rule is that you are responsible for missed work. The first day you are late for an assignment, you get 10% off, then 20%, next 30%, and then on the fourth day you receive no credit and still have to do the assignment. Although if you miss many work assignments because you were hospitalized or such, Mr. Schick may excuse you. I also learned there is absolutely no extra credit, except maybe at the end of a test. Today, Mr. Schick told us that he is an awesome teacher to all students, but some of those students also say he’s a jerk based on his grading choices for teaching. So far I think Mr. Schick is a cool teacher.  I don't want to be someone who experiences the 10%, 20%, 30% or more rule! I had a great first day of school!  This seems like a cool class.

How was Your First Day?

I enjoyed my first day attending The John Carroll School. I was a little nervous about what to expect since St. Margaret is a much smaller school and I was there for nine years. I enjoyed meeting all my new teachers and new classmates and I am glad that I had the opportunity to experience a day of orientation without the older students. Attending orientation gave me a chance to see how I would have to adapt to high school by being able to attend one day to see what it’s really like. I learned that I have little time to get from class to class and how tight my schedule will be, so I will have to be organized. Also, now I know what to do and not to do during this coming school year.
I’ll be honest, it seems high school might be harder than I thought, but it doesn’t mean I won’t still try my best. I know that at the end of my time at John Carroll, I’ll be able to say that I did my work to the best of my abilities and I will be ready for college.
